Our story

A café that learned to be quiet

Grindhouse Commons started in 2019 as a six seat espresso counter in a former printing shop off downtown Asheville. Freelancers kept staying past lunch, so we knocked through the wall to the old press room, kept the counter loud and made the back room silent.

Today the front is still a working coffee bar for the neighborhood. The back is a members' workspace with real desks, real chairs, phone booths and a conference room named after the thing that started it all.

"We kept the hiss of the steam wand on one side of the door and the hum of people concentrating on the other."
Nadia Fennimore, founder

Heard in the back room

"I finished my picture book on Resident desk four. The Percolator is where I pitched it, and the cortado is why I kept showing up."

"I write grant applications for a living. The back room is the only place in Asheville where I get four hours of real focus before lunch."

"I come in on Drop-In days when my apartment gets too loud. Same seat by the window every time, and nobody minds that I barely talk."
