Origin
Lanternfish Choir met in 2019 on the night shift at an aquarium on the Lisbon waterfront: a diver, a lighting technician, a night security guard and the woman who fed the jellyfish. After closing they played in the empty tunnel beneath the main tank, where the glass turned every note into something that sounded like it came from the bottom of the sea.
They call what they make abyssal dream rock: choral four part harmonies, analogue synths, a theremin and drums recorded in a decommissioned sardine cannery in Matosinhos.
Creative identity
Every Lanternfish Choir record is mapped to a depth. Shows are lit only by the band's own stage lanterns, so the room goes from twilight to total darkness across the set. No phones on stage, no backing tracks, and the last song is always sung unplugged from the middle of the crowd.
